Join the L3 lab.

The L3 lab is recruiting PhD students to start in Fall 2024.

We seek students with a background in a technical area (e.g. computer science, mathematics, physics) and relevant research interests (e.g. machine learning, language models, reinforcement learning, proof assistants; check out our projects page). If you are unsure, please apply!

Please mention Sean Welleck as a potential advisor in your CMU School of Computer Science PhD application. The early deadline for PhD applications is Nov. 29, 2023 at 3 p.m. EST, and the final deadline is Dec. 13, 2023 3 p.m. EST [source].

Should I send an email?

PhD applicants

Please feel free to send an email to Sean with a few lines about your past experience and why you’re interested in working with the L3 Lab, with [phd-application] in the subject line. We will read the email, but due to the high volume of emails, we will likely be unable to respond.

If your CMU PhD application is accepted, please reach out!

CMU students

  • PhD students: if your research interests overlap with the L3 lab and you would like to collaborate, please reach out to Sean.
  • Undergraduate and Master’s students: if you are a CMU student interested in working with the L3 lab, please fill out this form. We may recruit students for Spring 2024. Due to the high volume of emails, we will likely be unable to respond.

Opportunities outside of CMU

Unfortunately, at this time the L3 Lab does not have openings for internships or visiting students.
